And unless there's some sort of Aiken-centric novel or comic book spinoff in the works, it seems doubtful we ever will. We never did learn much more about Aiken's time as a Spartan or why he was allowed to leave the program. It is disappointing that Aiken was sacrificed given how interesting yet unexplored his background is. The shot of Aiken standing proud on the mesa and welcoming a blast of sun is the one piece of cinematography that really stands out on this show. His death scene was a ncie way to ring ut Nightfall. The fact that he manipulated the act of drawing straws to ensure he would lose was a nice touch. This really became Steven Waddington's time to shine as Aiken, as his character reflected back on years of hardship and sacrifice and made the tough decision about who would live and who would die. Still, the emotional weight of this finale was handled well. Hopefully he'll fare better in the game itself. Neither the bland writing nor Mike Colter's performance have done much to endear me to the character over the past month. Not that I would have cared much if he did. Obviously he was never going to meet his fate on Alpha Shard. It didn't help that so much emphasis had been placed on Nightfall as the debut of Agent Locke ahead of his appearance in Halo 5. Everything played out pretty much as expected, with Ramos and Horrigan getting their justly deserved fates and Aiken sacrificing himself so that Locke and Macer could live to fight another day. There weren't many surprises t be had in this final chapter. All the while, the knowledge that only two people could possibly escape imminent death by burning kept the drama flowing. On the other, Aiken, Locke, and Macer found possible salvation in the form of a banged-up but still partially functional Condor. On one hand, Ramos and Horrigan led their captive smuggler and struggled to avoid turning on each other as they already had the rest of their squad. The tension continued to mount in "Devil Take the Hindmost" as two factions of surviving soldiers fought their way to the escape craft.
